How to Detect Spyware

If you are a user of the Internet, you are probably worried about spyware. Spyware is any software that is put on your computer without your knowledge. If you are not worried about detecting spyware on your computer, you should be. The number of computers being infected with spyware is increasing at an alarming rate. Currently spyware has got the attention of states in the US, because several states are looking to pass or have passed legislature making it illegal because of all the trouble it causes. Detecting spyware as soon as it appears on your computer is important to prevent system problems.

How would you be able to detect spyware on your computer? It is very hard for you to detect spyware put on your computer until it starts causing problems. You will first notice a difference in the way your computer is acting. It may be any number of things including noticing your computer running slower, pop-up ads appearing all over your screen, and/or your browser home page is constantly being changed to a different URL. If you have spyware eating up memory without your knowledge, the computer will start running slow. At first, you may only notice your computer running a bit sluggish, but over time, it will become slower and slower until you can hardly do anything on it. Sometimes you visit a page and when you go to exit, you see a pop-up that asks if you want to change your home page to their page. If you say no, it should not change your page. However, spyware usually does not ask, it just changes your home page. More disturbing symptoms of spyware will be system crashes (often accompanied by error messages) or your computer not even being able to start up at all.

You can get spyware on your computer simply by doing day-to-day activities. If you surf the web and click on the wrong page, your computer can become infected with spyware. If you download free software or music, you are also subject to being a victim of spyware. Even something as simple as reading an email or sending a friend an instant message makes you susceptible. Your best defense against spyware is having a good anti-spyware package to detect spyware, adware and other forms of malware.

To detect spyware is only part of the process. Now that you know it is there, you will need software that both detects spyware and removes it. If you choose a good spyware package, such as Webroot’s Spy Sweeper, you can be assured that it will detect spyware and removed it from your computer safely– before you even know it is there. Anti-spyware packages try to keep ahead of spyware in that as soon as the software detects spyware on a computer, the spyware database is updated. When the new database is distributed to the users, their computer is then protected from that spyware. Because new spyware is being invented every day, it is a race for the anti-spyware software companies to be able to detect spyware quickly and remove it.

Failure to detect spyware can be anything from annoying to detrimental for your computer, but if you take the right precautions with a reliable anti-spyware software package that will detect spyware immediately, you will feel more protected.
