Email Phishing Safety
Wow, would you believe PayPal is asking me to login to my account and verify some information for them? Just kidding, another phishing email hoping that I would follow their instructions. All it takes is one person and the criminals have made their money. I found a couple of safety tips to pass along to anyone interested:
- Be skeptical, err on the side of caution when you receive any email asking to verify personal information.
- If you recognize the company, you can verify with them by phone to see if this was email sent from them. (But use the number you have on a paper statement or from some other source!)
- Always scrutinize your credit card and bank statements for suspicious activity.
- Check your hosts files for malicious entries.
- Always report suspicious emails you receive to the company they’re supposedly from.
