Keystroke Logger
A keystroke logger (also known as a keylogger) is a form of tracking software that records every keystroke you make on your computer. These programs record all your activity – whether from e-mails you create, chat room conversations, web sites visited or instant messages you send.
What does this mean to the average home PC user? It means that someone can gain access to your personal information via a keystroke logger or keylogger application. Just think of the personal information you type on your computer on any given day:
- Do you use your bank’s online banking service? A keystroke logger can capture your user id and password, thus allowing a third party to gain access to your bank accounts.
- Do you pay your credit card online, or go to their web site to check your current balance? One of those nasty keystroke logger or keylogger programs can save your personal account information and transmit it to a third party with not-so-good intentions.
- Do you use a software program to keep track of your checkbook or other bank accounts? Even though you’re not connected to the internet while using the program, a keylogger will keep track of everything you type. When your software program prompts you to enter your bank name and account number, do you enter it? If you have a keystroke logger running on your computer someone else will see that information as well.
- Do you use a word processing program on your PC for preparing personal correspondence? Maybe you had to type a letter to your student loan provider with your Social Security Number on it for reference. Maybe your Social Security Number is your account number. Yes, a keylogger or keystroke logger program will capture that information as well.
Scary, isn’t it? If you have a keystroke logger on your computer everything you type is recorded and transmitted to a third party. And your activity is recorded whether or not you are on the internet when you type it! With identity theft a real threat, it’s unsettling to think what these perpetrators could do to you with the information gathered from a keylogger program.
