Spyware Terms

This page contains a glossary of common spyware terms.

Adware. Short for Advertising Display Software, a form of spyware that causes banners or pop-up ads to be generated on your computer while you are on the internet.

Browser Helper Objects. Also known as BHOs, a browser helper object is a software component designed to change the functionality of Internet Explorer.

Browser Hijacker. A browser hijacker is a form of system modification spyware designed to change your internet settings and/or options on your PC.

Home Page Hijacker. A form of system modifying software that changes your internet settings to something other than what you specified.

Malware. Short for Malicious software, a broad term used to categorize any program created or designed to cause harm or damage to a computer or network.

Phishing. The practice of sending fraudulent emails in order to steal personal information from a person such as their Social Security number, credit card number, or user ID and password.

Spyware. Undesirable or unwanted software installed on your computer without your knowledge or consent.

System Monitors. A form of tracking software designed to monitor, record and transmit your computer usage. This information is secretly recorded and then transmitted to a third party for their use.

Tracking Cookie. A small text file designed to track your internet usage and habits. It is often installed by advertisers wanting to get marketing data.
